If Your Hair is shedding too Much… Ask Yourself these Questions!

When we see a lot of hair in the bathroom sink, it’s easy to freak out. But remember that shedding is a natural part of the hair growth cycle. Your hair is supposed to shed. And it sheds daily.

Every day it is normal to see 100 to 150 strands fall, and depending on your curls you will see them mostly when you detangle your hair, which is when they have the opportunity to go out easier.

If you’re alarmed by the amount of hair that you’re seeing ask yourself a few questions before freaking out and worrying too much…


Is it shedding or breaking?

The best way to answer this is by doing a quick bulb test. By examining the hair, you’ll know if it’s shedding or breaking by checking if the strands have the bulb or not. If it’s shedding and it’s within the normal among of hair fall we mentioned before, don’t worry; it’s just a normal part of the process, but if it isn’t within the amounts we said are normal, you can start by using some homemade treatments to prevent it.

If it’s breaking, you’ll need to take action to prevent any more breakage or damage. Improve the overall health of your hair to reduce hair breakage by maintaining the balance. But keep in mind it’s virtually impossible to completely eliminate breakage.

Have you made any changes to your diet/routine or recently started a new medication or hormone therapy?

Excessive shedding can be a tell-tale sign of internal stressors to the body. High levels of stress, diet changes, sickness, medications, surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal fluctuations, just to name a few, can all contribute to excessive shedding.

When was the last time you detangled your hair?

If you wear a protective style for 6 weeks or more, you could see approximately 6,300 – 8,400 strands of shed hair that have yet to be combed out. This can easily explain why you’re seeing a lot of hair.
